About Mary

Born, raised, and still living in Chicago, Illinois, Mary Vasquez is a survivor of childhood sexual violence who has conquered Post-traumatic Stress (PTS).  A social entrepreneur on a mission to serve trauma survivors, she's certified in Mental Health First Aid and serves on the Planning Committee member of the Chicagoland Trauma Informed Congregation Network, an effort by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), University of Illinois Hospital, and Advocate Health.

Her biological father sexually abused her from about the age of five until she turned 13.  During one of the darkest times of her life after the abuse, she was living at the YMCA in the Gold Coast in a room the size of a large, walk-in closet and working as a security guard in a River North condo building.

That’s when Mary says she was blessed with the remarkable experience and privilege of writing a book she never wanted to write, A Rape Survivor’s Spiritual Journey: My Poems and Practical Exercises.

When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!

When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!

When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!

As a bonus, at the end of my book you will find out how to get a copy of this entire song for free!

Story Behind the Song

After I decided to publish my first book, I thought about survivors visiting my website. I wanted to console them somehow; especially, if they were having a bad day. I kept thinking about the old “Cheers” TV series, and how it had such a fun and cheerful theme song. That’s what I wanted: a “feel good” theme song for my website, so I prayed for it.  Considering I know nothing about music, I believe God delivered big time.  Be sure to let me know what you think!

By the looks on their faces, I knew the few people I told about my idea didn’t think it was so great. I just couldn’t give up on it, so I started praying for it the summer of 2008. The words came to me over time, but it wasn’t until right before Christmas that year I finished the lyrics.

For the longest time, I knew the song was incomplete because it had no heart and soul. A stanza was missing. I finally understood after the words came to me. God held back the stanza, not because he was being stingy, but because I had to learn to live the words on my own before I could write them. I had to be authentic.

In 2009, I asked my friend Shyvone Blunt if she would record the song for me. I didn’t even know if she could sing. Something told me to ask her, and, boy, can she sing! God works in mysterious ways because Shyvone was estranged from God at the time. He loves drama, too, because I don’t know anything about music. The words and the music just started coming to me one day, and more songs just keep coming. I finished writing a rap song a while back (to be released), and God only knows what’s next.

Lyrics for “When Life Gets You Down, Get Up!”

Vocalist Shyvone Blunt
Musical Arrangement by Turrell Brown
Music and Lyrics by Mary Vasquez

Don’t listen to the voices in your head
convincing you that your dreams are dead.
Tell them. Right here. Right now. They’re wrong.
Go back and say, “No way. I’m strong!

When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.

When your friends laugh and look at you
And say, “Your dreams won’t ever come true.”
Tell them. Right here. Right now. They’re wrong.
Get out! Get out! And move along.”

When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up. When life…
When life gets you down, get up.
When life gets you down, get up.

When you’re settled in your new found life,
Things are goin’ great and there’s no more strife.
A good friend comes along n’ then you feel betrayed
When you want to quit and hide away.
Feelin’ like you can’t take life no more.
Get down on your knees ‘n keep hittin’ that floor.

When life kicks you down, pray hard. Pray hard! Pray hard ‘n find the light!

When you listen and you pray some more
Real soon you’ll find that open door
Just keep prayin’ hard; keep hittin’ that floor
Tell God. Right here. Right now. I’m yours.
I’ll give you all of me mind, body, and soul
He’ll pave a way and show you a new role.

When God lifts you up, give thanks. Give thanks! Give thanks and be the light!
When God lifts you up, give thanks. Give thanks! Give thanks and be the light!
When God lifts you up, give thanks. Give thanks! Give thanks and be the light!

Core Values

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'

The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

There is no other commandment greater than these."

(Mark 12:30-31)

Mission Statement

To help trauma survivors explore the infinite power of their spirit

"The victory that conquers the world is our faith." (1 John 5:4)

Although quoted from the Bible, people of all faiths can agree. Unfortunately, in the midst of our suffering, this universal Truth often escapes us. During our darkest moments, we're drowning in our despair. We're struggling to save our lives and our sanity, and we can't or don't know how to pull ourselves out of the darkness to be able to reach out to God or anyone else. We feel that God and the entire world have abandoned us Ven though we know that God is always with us.

At Apprentice Butterflies Publishing, Inc., we publish spiritual books by and for survivors of trauma including the most severe type of trauma: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD. We hope that sharing our own experiences will help you begin or continue your healing journey.

Then, going beyond our own suffering, we continually share our mysterious relationship with our creator. We agree to disagree about religion and beliefs, but we all agree on needing a God-centered, spiritual life. Whether you choose to call this all-powerful life force the creator, the universe, or God, is your choice. We are not here to judge but to love and support each other.
